DIABETES MAIN-PAGE
PAGE INTRO: Diabetes is a common endocrine disorder (hormone gland disorder) that affects millions of people in the U.S. and worldwide. This disease affecting blood glucose regulation has autoimmune aspects to it, especially "type I diabetes" which can have a very early onset in children. When it occurs later in life, it is referred to as "type II diabetes" and is common in people who become obese. There are pre-diabetes disorders as well, including "metabolic syndrome", "fatty liver", "insulin resistance" and "hypoglycemia". Medical research confirms that people with thyroid diseases, are at higher risk for developing Type II Diabetes, also called Adult Onset Diabetes. -Jim Lowrance- _________________________________________________________________________________
J. T. Female – AL Life Long Diabetes
I developed diabetes at a very young age. I started insulin shots at the age of six years. Other than occasional severe episodes of hypoglycemia I’ve done well with the disease since my youth and on up to my late 20s. In my thirties I began to experience more difficulties including small skin injuries that would turn into serious sores and would take months to heal. In my 40s I began getting ulcer type sores on my feet and these were of more concern when several would occur and would worsen badly before getting better. Now in my late 40s I have no sores and very few hypoglycemic episodes. I attribute success with treatment to exercise more than to any other factor apart from insulin regulation. I plan to live into my 80s and beyond as my mother did who was also a type I diabetic. With this much improvement from regular exercise which in my case are long walks I take several times weekly, I will never stop doing it until I’m too old to keep it going! Even when I get too old to walk regularly, I’ll find some way to keep exercising.
